Oops, All Angles!

Big development today, this week in preparation for Just Drift Top Drift Battle! I ordered a set of stock geometry SN95 control arms to replace the forward offset Fox control arms.

angles
MM SN95 stock geometry control arms move the balljoint back 3/4" and out 3/4" from where they were with the MM Fox forward offset arms.

angles
Sub-frame clearance added to give the 245/45R17 tires a little bit more breathing room.

angles
Mad Angles!

angles
The new arms required me to change to SN95 inner tie rods and Ford Taurus outers. Some additional steering rack modifications and a bit more sub-frame clearance should be good for even more angle.

Summary:

  • MM Stock geometry SN95 control arms
  • Stock sub-frame
  • Racecraft Drop Spindles
  • Eiback Coilovers on Bilstein shocks
  • SN95 Inner Tie Rods
  • Ford Taurus Outer Tie Rods or 96+ SN95 Outer Tie Rods

What the Future Holds:
More frame clearance, some rack modifications, and a custom control arm should give us quite a bit more angle to work with.

Remember you will need to align the car after installing these and that they add a significant amount of negative camber.

Eibach Coilover Install

August 29th, 2007 -
  • Drift Fox's blog

eibach install

Get the car supported up on jack stands so that you have some space to work.

eibach install

Unbolt the Strut from the Spindle. I recommend removing the brake caliper and rotor to get a bit more working space. It also does not hurt to inspect your brakes while you are in here.

eibach install

Unbolt the retaining nut on top of the strut.

eibach install

You should now be able to drop the strut out of the car. Notice the spacer stack on the top of the strut.

eibach install

We will be replacing the 600lbs/in silver springs with the red ones from Eibach. It is difficult to tell in the picture, but the silver springs had a bit of a bow to them which caused some rubbing and interference. The Eibachs are a much nicer unit.

eibach install

Because the 500lbs/in springs are a bit softer I took the small spacer from the top of the Caster/Camber plate and put it on the bottom because we want to retain our current ride height.

eibach install

Here is a shot of the full assembly back in place. In this shot you can also see out Racecraft spindles.

eibach install

Re-install the the caliper and rotor, torque everything down and you are done with this side of the car.

eibach install

In total the install of the two new Eibach springs took me around 60 minutes.

David: Drifter Episode 7

One major issue faced when lowering a Fox mustang is the change that it makes to the front roll center of the car. The roll couple, defined by the front and rear roll center heights gets thrown out of whack because the front roll center height decreases at a much faster rate when lowered then the rear does. Using a dropped spindle helps to mitigate this factor by using spindle pin position to lower the car as opposed to reducing the height on the coil over. Two other benefit of this method of lowering the car are improved camber curve and more bump travel. It also appears that with these new spindles, we will be able step down the front spring rate a bit. Next time out at the track we will be running a set of 500 lbs/in Eibach Springs on the front of the car, as opposed to the 600 lbs/in springs we ran last time.

RaceCraft sent us some spindles and Eibach sent us some springs. The spindles are SN95 style 2 inch drop units. The Eibach springs are 600lbs/in front and 250lbs/in rear. Thanks to Eibach and Racecraft for supporting our drift program.
