Hi guys as some of you know my diff is dead and it needs to be taken out. I've been trying to take it out for two days now (I thought it will be very easy at first BUT...) At the end of yesterday I've started to take the axle out, but the bolts were very hard to take out so I decided to come back today. Today I screwed out the four bolts as shown here: http://www.expertvillage.com/video/65434_differential-leak-remove-axle.h... but the axle didnt come out... I try to use strenth, but nothing worked out... I called a friend (machanic) and he sayed that I need some kind of a special tool for that...

I don't know what to do... :( I'm getting depresed and pissed-off.
What should I do? how do I take that thing out?

P.S I've found this thread in explorer-forum and they have the same problem over there to than a guy sugest to use a tool thats made for that and the guy that needed help was happy that it was OT. Anyways here is the link to explorerforums http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?p=2032059

Should I try this kind of a tool?

Sry for my bad English

Looks like their explaination on the explorer forum is for the front wheel drive diff not the rear. rears dont have "half shafts" unless its an IRS rear.

This may be dumb, but did you pull the clips out? For a mustang rear end all you do is remove the diff cover. rotate the diff till you see the cross pin bolt. Its usually an 8mm/5/16" bolt. Be careful not to strip it. remove the bolt, then slide the cross pin out. Push one axle in and remove the c clip the sits in the groove on the end. Usually a little magnet gets it or a drop out on its own. Then you simple slide the axle out the side. Do the same for the other side. then after that its just a matter of removing the 4 bearing cap bolts and removing the bearing caps. If you are going to re use all this, make sure you keep everything in order or you will have a whiney gear setup.

Now if you have pulled the c clips and the axles wont come out. well then you might have a bent axle or axle tube. Then in that case id get a slide hammer with that attachment that lets you bolt it down to the lug studs. Then pound away.

$5 bucks says he didnt know about the C-clip.
Dont worry, I learned by doing this over and over in the junkyard. Pull the diff cover and you'll see how it works. Just like Mars says- 8mm bolt, then rotate the diff around until you can lightly knock out the cross pin bolt (about 5/8" thick pin). It might take a bit of maneuvering to get it out, but if you get it loose, and keep spinning the diff it'll eventually drop right out. Once you get the C-clips out, it'll slide out of the axle housing no prob.

The 9" Ford only requires you to unbolt that 4 bolts at the axle, the 8.8" Ford needs to have the c-clips in the center removed.

Don't even get me started on hybrid rearends with an 8.8" ring gear and 9" axles.

:)
