Tire Rack- Revolutionizing Tire Buying

Budget 5-lug/rear disc conv. advice.

I just picked up a 92 GT for $800 a couple weeks ago. Definately not perfect but it works for the back and forth from work. The rear drums are shot (You can hear them grinding when the brake pedals is pressed at any speed) and was wondering if there was some way that I could do a budget (around $800ish) 5-lug/rear disc swap. Also are you guys still running the stock clutch fan?

You should be able to pick up an entire rearend out of an SN95 for less then $500. If you shop around you can find one with a lower gearset as well. Fox Mustangs typically have a 2.73 gear. Up front you can get a set of Mark VII rotors and probably some new pads.

I am running an electric fan setup on my car, using a DCC fan controller and a junkyard fan. http://www.dccontrol.com/

Sweet thanks, I got ahold of the rear end yesterday evening, but the MKVII pieces are proving to be quite a problem.

It might be possible to get the MKVII rotors at the part store.

Talked to a friend of mine today who said that the SN-95 rear end wouldn't fit on the car. Just figured I'd pick your brain on that.

I have one in my car, the axles are 3/4 of an inch longer, but 5 lug wheels tend to have more offset. The housing is the same. You may need a new whip on your brake line, but you should probably replace that anyhow.

Im assuming that the extra inch and a half of width isn't a bad thing either. Also curious on where you purchased your coil over kit?

I am running an MM Coilover Kit. It used Bilstein Shocks and Struts.

I looked it up. The entire kit is a little out of my price range at the moment. (Have a 2 month old son). Would it do me any good to buy the rear/front separately and apply them as such? If so, which would be the smartest to do first.

i was told the car is not to be driven unless both ends of the car have coild overs and that they shoudlnt be installed seperatly, but thats what jason at MM said

what do you think about the MM "stock brake upgrade package" I think it could be good. Would it help the handbrake to pull harder(rear drums)?

There's some way to tighten up the E-brake cables, that'll help the brake pull harder, not quite sure how to do it. But im sure Geoff can explain that.

Rustang,

If I could only do coilovers on one end of the car, I would do the front, but I would probably try to hold out until I could afford a whole set. Drifting is not going anywhere, it's ok to take your time.

Suo,

I never actually used the factory ebrake setup on the car, so I don't really have any tricks for making it more effective. You do want to make sure that you delete the button so that you don't end up locking the ebrake mid-drift.

I WON THE LOTTERY! Right, had you going. I did however get that rear end installed, got the old 18in wheels from my 05' mustang put on it, and did the MKVII rotor conversion. The wheels look a little goofy but its like a whole new car with LSD and Rear disc.

I bet. What style of 18" wheels are you running? OEM ones? I need to find a pair of 18x8 25mm wheels for the front of my car, and usually prefer OEM wheels.

Typically the offset is written on the inside back of the wheel.

I cheated once. I took a bunch of washers cut some slots into them. stuffed them between the bracket where the cables for the rear meet the cables for the front to take up some slack and wrapped some tape around them to kepe them on. It sorta worked

Actually I was maybe a bit inebriated when I put down that they were 18in wheels. They're the 17in split spoke GT rims.

Rota makes some wheels with decent offsets. I use the "D2" because they offer 17s and 18s with decent offsets. Geoff- they have a 18x8 with a 25mm offset. Thats what my new car has up front.
They also make the the P45F (for FRONT) in a 18x8.5 with a 20mm offset. You can get the P45R (REAR) in a 18 x 9.5 with a 12mm offset- this is what I wanted to run on the new car, but they were out of stock.
All nice looking wheels- not extremely light weight, but not expensive either.

It is possible. I believe that you can use the axles and brake drum from a Ford Ranger to convert to 5-lug. Of course, the biggest reason to convert is for the cheap disk brakes. If you are gonna stay with drums, you might consider getting some pony wheels and running 16" tires.

yup you get ranger axles, you have to get 2 from one side, I forget, or you two from an aerostar of the opposite side. You get the drums from the 7.5" rear end with the 9" drums, you can google it and a few sites will come up on what you will need specially. Its the easist way to go 5 lug, its what I did. I got some axles from someone else that was going to do the swap and they had also installed moroso extended lug studs too. 3" studs are huge!

http://mjbobbitt.home.comcast.net/~mjbobbitt/mustang/5lug.html covers a lot of it already, in fact it should be sticked or added to a FAQ thread on here.

Im in Tampa. ICNTDRV lives in Orlando as well.
