Tire Rack- Revolutionizing Tire Buying

2.3 drifting

ok so i told my grandmother that i was going to do the 302 swap for more power for drifting, and then we got talking and she brought up why not keep using the 2.3 till it craps out and that way il have experience and more money to use on it later. i got to thinking and it seemed logical to me. but is it even possible to keep drifts going in the 2.3 with a good setup, i could use the money i was going to use on the swap for the suspension, btw i dont rly car how hard it is, as long as its possible to drift the 2.3 with style.

We really don't care about that here, unless it starts becoming a constant issue.

As for your car situation, that sounds like a good idea. Suspension first, power can happen later. :)

Starscream5.0

I drifted and competed in my S13 the last 2yrs it's about ~2500lbs and ~155whp/153tq (NA 2.4) and I did very well, held my own against 250-350whp turbo Miatas, 240s, etc. Tied for 6th place this season, so power isn't everything. I have alot into suspension, tires and chassis to make up for the underpower engine, but I kept it simple and it never let me down. In drifting it's more about the car's set-up, proper tire compound/size and driver skill than it is about power.

It could be fun to do, but your going to spend even more money setting it up and tuning. So think it through first. Power can always come later.

In my opinion I think the turbo 4cyl would be a great starter project for real! Although the 5.0 is definately much more simple to maintain, the 2.3T can give a beginner a great idea as to how to problem solve and diagnose problems with the vehicle. And beside that, while it is extremely rare in the mainstream mustang population, there is some SERIOUS power that can be developed out of the little 2.3L. A close personal friend of mine runs waaay low 10's with a 2.3. Its no where near stock but its a 2.3

also with the turbos and drifting how do they mix, i see that heat is a major issue and i want to address it , whats the optmial cooling i should use in a turbo setup. and to counter act the bad airflow that happens when you drift

This is a pretty complex answer to a simple question. There are similar problems to running a forced induction V-8 too (aka, my car). I wish it was as simple as adding a nice big fat radiator, and a couple of fans. Unfortunately, its not.
Here's some tips;
Adding some nice big fans costs a lot of voltage, which means its creating a lot of draw on the altenator and charging system. If you havent already, upgrade your altenator to the 3G found in 95 5.0 mustangs, which put out double what the factory alt does (only 60). You dont have to go big dual fans (like my car), infact I think a really good SHROUDED single fan (like the Volvo fan Geoff uses on his car) is great, coupled with a thermostat fan controller. Next, is air circulation. Make sure your fans are sealed nicely to the radiator. We have heat ducting tape sealing the fans to the radiator, every little bit helps. Getting air through the radiator (and intercooler) is a big issue. Most of the air flow is actually moving across the front corners of your car diagonally, instead of straight through the front bumper like all other racing. This is a problem. Rear mount ducting has been a solution many have integrated, but its very dangerous to run any kind of hot liquid through the drivers compartment, and starting in 2009, ITS BANNED IN FORMULA DRIFT (which also means PRO-AM). A vented hood will help lots, and you can even raise the back of the hood by using longer hood bolts (to the hinges) spaced up with washers. Remember, its equally important to EXTRACT HOT AIR as it is to bring in cool air.
There are several opinions about heat wrap, but Turbos create an insane ammount of heat. Turbos heat soak engines faster than anything. I heat wrap my headers to keep heat away from the intake manifold, (cuz high intake temps are baaaaddd), as well as spark plug wires, spark plugs, and clutch cable. Some people say that heat wrap works in a negative way, trapping the heat inside the headers, not allowing them to "breath" for lack of a better term. For me, the pro's outway the cons.

hey dan(or ne one else) what would u do? i only have money for either power or suspension. if i go turbo i probly wont be able to do any suspension upgrades for awhile expect maybe panhard bar and springs and welded diff. but if i keep my n/a i could go pretty far in spension upgrades if i find some deals. but im leaning twards the turbo simply b/c there just.....amazing lol and sound cool, also i kinda feel like im rushing into things should i take my time on gettin the parts or wut?

I would do suspension. I am on year two of my build and the engine is still bone stock.

Mustangs don't drift well without the suspension. You might just get discouraged and quit if you don't do suspension first. Also it's much cheaper to space out the suspension purchases.

"how do u think 80-90 hp would handle with a good suspension setup"

Fucking fantastic, if you set it up close to what Geoff & David's car.
You should be more than fine as far as horsepower is concerned. I had n/a RX-7 FC and I got sideways just fine, and that's with a viscous diff. A good diff and the proper setup will get you pretty far.

And, if you ever get a 5.0, the parts will swap, because, hey! Same car!

It also would be much much cheaper to buy a new 5.0 then to build a crazy turbo 4 cyl. to match stock power of a 5.0.
