What do people think about moving to vbulletin?

I have a vbulletin board that I run on DriftLive.com. It has about 10 billion times the features that this site does. What do you guys think about me moving the Mustang stuff over there?

You would have to re-register, but we would gain a lot of cool features. Picture uploads, PM, email notifications, thread subscriptions, better picture display, ability to post videos easily.

I would move all the content we have on here now over to the new site.

That's fine for me, the site name is still gonna be drift50.com/driftmustang.com right?

I have to see what that will take. You would get to the new forum by typing www.drift50.com/forums still, but the URL might have to change. I would make sure the look was still drift50.

I would also keep the mustang portion of the thread private to only Mustang enthusiasts. I am not interested in getting a bunch of fanboy trollers in there.

I'm not big on the fanboys either, but I mean, it IS what it is. I think those with the Mustangs/Domestics who aren't into drifting and those who are into drifting but not into Mustangs/Domestics would most likely steer clear to avoid being romped out.

Remember this phrase, those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter. The REAL drivers and racers aren't on the interwebs trying to stir up trouble (in most cases ^_^). The one's who are causing havoc are usually the 15 year-old expert drifter who has a point to prove.

I for one, am all about moving to Vbulliten. More options, more features, greater usability, higher user-friendliness, etc. It would not only become a benefit to the owners and operators as those sites tend to generally be able to run themselves, but it's also more of a plus to the user/forum goer who just wants something simple to post on that looks kinda pretty.

Heck, if you want, you can make it a pay-only membership. Something silly like 20 bucks a year, throw together some Drift Mustang or Drift 5.0 stickers and we can make an exclusive Drift Team out of the whole thing. Once a year meetings and such, LOL! Okay, I'm overshooting, but yeah, that's how my brain operates.

Sounds good. CBLeslie and I will make this happen this weekend. The board is already up and running now, but we need to get the Mustang stuff setup and working correctly for a smooth transition.

It's not possible to diffrentiate between the Driftlive and the Drift50 forums? I realize Driftlive is a little...well...sparse but I'd hate to have the Mustang part of drifting get muddled with 240 tech, which I frankly don't want to read about. If I wanted to know about Nissan I would go to Zilvia, if I wanted to know about Mustang's I'd come here. Us Mustang's are a rare enough breed (ha, pun) and I'd hate for that close community feeling and support be confused by people looking for a general drift forum.

Vbulliten is good though, considering you can transfer the wealth of information from here to there.

Ya iam 50/50 on this. I also think it will get cluttered with off topic poop!

If you do go with the change I will still be ok with it.

Sounds good as long as it's still exclusive. We have become accustomed to the camaraderie and niche we have here. We didn't get Mustangs to blend in with the rest of the drifters, we got them to stand out and separate us from the next 240. LOL. I'm excited! I love new stuff. I love it when most major companies do website updates after the new year. I love the fresh new look. Keeps it exciting.

It would be exclusive, I want 240 info like a hole in the head. :-P

The Mustang section would not be mixed in with the other stuff and would require special membership. It would also look different then other sections of the board.

Wouldn't making it exclusive turn away people who would otherwise join us, but decide not to due to the inconvienience of having to be "cleared"? If it's hidden then that's especially true.

@Jetsetter
We would never 'ex' anyone out of the being a member on any of our boards. We would just have a custom class of poster known as the "mustang owner". that would really be no different from another. They may have access to post on a special forum of some sort, but that's it.

@Chris & everyone -
I understand you Chris when you say off topic poop. I personally don't want this board to get weighed down with too much LOLCATS and the likes. I feel if we as a community can keep a good pace with the forum, and encourage others (n00bs and 'classic' members alike) to keep postings relevant, it will still be the same great place (MAYBE EVEN BETTER!) to post, ask questions, and have fun.

For warning; I know I don't have to say this, because everyone has been so great to each other; but just in case we get some "Little Timmy's" on the new board:

Remember, we all didn't know about cars/drifting at one time or another. Everyone is here for information, and no one should ever be discouraged for asking questions, regardless of how stupid they may seem. It's our mission here to encourage young drivers (mustang drivers or otherwise) to learn. Exclusivity hurts communities, and I don't feel anyone, EVEN IF THEY DRIVE A 240, should not be allowed to learn from our experience. As well as us learning from theirs!

I wait for the day when this statement becomes true.
"Today's 240SX drivers are Tomorrows Mustang enthusiast."

By exclusive, I did not mean restricted membership, I ment Mustang centered content. There is another area for general drifting discussion, so we can keep the Mustang section clean.

"It's not what your Mustang can do for you, it's what you can do for your Mustang."

I take comfort in knowing that moderation can still be used to put down "OMG nissan drft is TEH ROXORS!!!11111oneeleven."

@leslie

wen/if you transfer over is all the threads and everything goint with it? if so mostly any question you have can be answered already unless there is sumthing new out there so the "little timmys" just have to look on the thread first for any questions they might have and if they still arent fufilled then ask the community. right? thats kinda wut i did wen i first joined a few weeks ago.

My problem arises when:

1. You get the 14 year old "expert" who swears he knows everything about drifting and one of the things he "knows" is that Mustangs don't drift.

2. You get the same expert that critiques your driving with little to no driving experience at all.

3. When you have people who have never set foot on a track trying to tell others how it's done, what they should do or how you should improve your game via modification, driving technique or otherwise.

4. One word: Posers

5. People who have done all of 2 events ever in life and now they swear they know everything there is about the sport and, let's not kid each other, lifestyle that is drifting.
Part of being new to the lifestyle is thinking you know all there is to know after 2 track events. Given time, and the proper social crowd to be around, that will die off for said individual.

Those are just a few things that get under my skin, I am willing to post up SEVERAL examples of what I'm referring to if necessary. But places like www.drift.com and www.driftcentral.com are packed to the hilt with keyboard drifters, bench racers, meritless teenagers and the sort who swear they are JR or Tsuchiya.

Sleepless,

when/if you transfer over is all the threads and everything goint with it?
We are going to do our best to port them over, but this will require database magic, that we may or may not have. We defineatly want to do the most active threads at the very least. If all else fails, this forum will remain alive for legacy sake, to point individuals in the right direction.

just have to look on the thread first for any questions they might have and if they still arent fufilled then ask the community.
While this may seem like a completely logical thing to do, both you and I know from other forum experience that the "little timmys" don't operate with the same graces. It's going to happen, they are going to sign up and ask the same questions over and over again, and that's fine, because all we have to do is:
1) Be kind, welcome them to the forum with open arms... err keyboards.
2) Kindly answer their question or direct them to the appropriate thread; as we are not a frat house there is no reason the haze them.
3) ???
4) Profit.

You like that, you see what I did there? :)

They will slowly (Quickly?) realize that perhaps they are on the wrong forum, and will enjoy being banned unless they can intelligently pose a consenting point of view. I think many people on the forum will have proven them wrong already.

2. You get the same expert that critiques your driving with little to no driving experience at all.
The proof is in the pudding, as they say. I'd like to believe that we're smart enough individuals on this forum that we can handle a little criticism. Especially when the critic himself/herself neglected to show us their Mad tight drifting skillz,yo.

3. When you have people who have never set foot on a track trying to tell others how it's done, what they should do or how you should improve your game via modification, driving technique or otherwise.
See #2

4. One word: Posers
It's a food chain, the circle of life! This is how we get our nourishments, this is how we grow strong! If that doesn't work for an answer, they're type doesn't last long. Also, the next answer could be relevant.\/

Part of our job is to cultivate the right community. If you see a situation, let an admin know. It's always better when we police ourselves. Knowing that, the best thing a forum can have is a common goal; so that when decisions need to be made as far as "Is this the direction that we want to go?" we won't hunt for the answer.

The only goal that Geoff & David has ever wanted was to foster growth in the drifting and mustang community. Let's face it, it needs help, but I think the people here are the ones to give it.

If we ever get off track, I would expect everyone to let each other know.
