Latest & Greatest about Drift Patrol...
Here's the latest news with the car...
Just thought I'd update you guys on whats been going on with the car so far, and what's changing.
All this season I've been having trouble keeping the car running well. It blew atleast 3 pairs of head gaskets. Most of this was due to the hugely increased power by upgrading our supercharger system, but not the stock motor. We ran the car for 3 or 4 years on the stock motor with an old blower at about 3-5 psi, and never had any troubles. This year we have been running about 10-15 psi on that same stock motor. After spending lots of money on machine work, expensive head gaskets, etc etc. I was pretty tired of it. In the meantime, I've been having my BOSS 347 built up. It was an all new long block assembly, sponsored by the awesome guys at Ford Racing.
The motor was finally ready to be used just before Irwindale, and instead of trying it out in the new car (Drift Patrol #2), I decided to break it in at Irwindale. At Irwindale however, something odd happened. The car was running great during practice, but near the end of the day we had issues, and the car was down on power. We scrambled to find the issue, but the issue seemed to point to tuning or something sensor related.
Next weekend, I'll be heading to the Red Bull World drifting competition, but not to do battle with the worlds best. Unfortunately, I'll be there to reclaim my FD license (which is required by all FD competitors not scoring enough points during the regular FD season). To give you an example, qualifying for the top 32 is ONLY worth 1/4 of a point.
More bad news....
I put the guys at Paxton in touch with my tuner, frustrated with the cars lack of reliability, and eager to get the situation figured out. The good news is, the problem can be fixed. The bad news is, its gonna cost lots of dough. Here's the general problem; the cars fuel system is incapable of keeping up with the motor and superchargers need for fuel. I upgraded everything this season, from injectors (to 42), a custom MAF (Pro Mass Air Systems), fuel pump (255 Trick Flow), and fuel pressure regulator (shipped to Vegas to install at the track!!). We even backed down the boost on the new motor (to protect it) to about 6-8 psi. Unfortunately, its still not enough. For some reason, the car would always run scary-lean over 5k RPM. See, drifting is unlike any sport when it comes to throttle-use. My motor sees 5,000-6,500 regularly. Another problem is heat. Drifting is also very hard on cars when it comes to heat, and the lack of air-flow. We run the shit out of our motors, ringing them out with harldy any air moving through the front grills (because we're sideways, and cars air-flows arent intended to work sideways), then we sit on grid behind other hot cars, unable to properly cool them down.
The Solution
After the tuner and Paxton talking, it was realized that the entire fuel system NEEDs to be upgraded. Fortunately, Vortech (Paxtons sister company) makes an entire fuel system upgrade for the car, which includes dual external pumps, inline filters, large diameter in-take fuel pick-ups, fuel line, and fuel rails. I definately didnt have the cash for this, especially with a $400 entry, $400 in gas (for the truck to make the 700mile roundtrip) and my air-fare from Chicago to Cali. Through some very fortunate circumstances (which is extremely confusing, lucky, and not worth explaining), I may have lucked into receiving the entire kit, sponsored (by someone other than Paxton). Either way, we'll have to install the kit when it arrives Tuesday, then tune the car Wed. Did I mention we are also trying to install our newly aqcuired aftercooler kit too? Its gonna be a lot of work, in a very short time. But hopefully, this will be the solution to our problems, and the end of our reliablity problems. Additionally, my tuner is confident we can safely make tons more power. :-D
I certainly hope so, otherwise I may be watching FD from the grandstands in 2009.

Good luck. I wish FD made it a little easier for those that competed most of the series but couldnt pull off a full point to retain the license. Just something like you can petition and hope they let you in.
u can do it lol good luck
thanks guys- yeah, its a real bummer and huge pain in the ass to have to go compete. Its not really that stressful (yet) from a competition standpoint, but its the fact everything has to go right for the car. And yeah, its seems totally stupid that no points or merrit is awarded for attending 75% of the season. The only other way is purchase my license, with a petition for $4,000. HA! Thats another Fox-body right there.
shit u know what i can do to my car if i had 4g's 1000hp lol fuck paying 4g for a license your skils should get that with no problem
Seems as if you've got the situation licked Dan. If your tuner is correct... Which it sounds like he is, then you will have very few unknowns when it comes to the car. So if the car is up to snuff... then it comes down to the driver and track conditions, seeing as how its formula drift, and you've got the skill to make it into FD in the first. Neither the track prep nor a lack of skill should help you keep that license.
...... totally fucked that last sentence.... "Should keep you from keeping that license...." I need cash bad, having drift withdrawl...
Hmm doesnt look so bad now. Looks like FD is modifying things so you can attempt to get your license the weekend of the events, so at least you got more than a few chances to regain your license next year.
?? Huh?
As far as I know, the only way to get it is to go this route (FDvsProAm), or petition (and pay $4,000). Am I missing something? If so lemme know cuz I'd love to save this 2 grand this event is costing me!

looks like doug and dan both get to retain their licenses!
Awesome. That's good to know.
Found this on the internet... admitantly not best run of the weekend. Look for my personal video hopefully posted later tonight.
No link in that post. Did you mean this one?
what your entry speed? Were you being as baller as the main event guys and hitting 100+?
Holy shit Dan! That looks like some pretty tight drivin
They moved the RBWDC guys starting line BACK about 100' to give them more entry speed than us. The average speed for the PRO-AM vs. FD was between 75-82. I averaged 80mph, with a high speed of 84.
This was definately not one of my better runs. I hope to have my video finished and posted tonight- so look out for it.
Also, the car is now making 522 rwhp. :-D I love my car
hey what spring rate are u running and r u using swaybars?
Pretty stiff spring rates to compensate for zero swaybars, but am considering making and adjustable front sway bar next year, more like a track bar like NASCAR style.
Spring rates are a well kept secret, but somewhere in the neighbor hood of 650-900 lbs front, and 275-350 rear.
lol i understand thanks
If you run sway bars though, you can use 275 rear springs and about 450+ front spring rates? Double check with Geoff on his car-
I run 450lbs front and 250 lbs rear springs. No rear bar, and a 4 cylinder front bar. My car is stripped down pretty good, so with a car that has full interior and a/c, stereo, etc, you might want to consider stepping up 25lbs or so in front.
yea but i got about 100lds off the front of the car plus the engine is an inch back .and im going to run the radiator in the back of the car.250-350 sound to soft but i gess it works.do u guys got coillowers in the rear.i got coillowers front and rear and i got 600 to try.and see what happens lol
I am running coilovers at all 4 corners.
