how often do you attend drift events and go drifting in general weither its at a church parkin lot or on the track? im just curious to kno how often ppl do this kinda stuff
lol i never do. i just see so many civics round here tryin to race on the streets.hmm so i guess u take like a couple of weeks to months to prep the car for events.
About once every 2 months is about all that I can afford while still making changes to the car. Once I get the car all dialed in, I bet I will be able to do more events. I figure that by June 2009 the car should be all dialed in, and it will be time to just drive it a lot.
Tomorrow I’ll have my first BIG drift event where all the coolest drifters of my country gathers for training. It’s gonna a challenge for me, and I hope that the best of trainings that I’ve have since now. Best drifters give their tips and help you with drifting so I hope that I’m going to improve my drifting. And it’s also going to be the first bigger track than the parking lot I’m training in… In that parking lot the best thing I can train is doing an 8.
I train every weekend if I have money and if my car’s OK.
I hope to get good footage of the Drift event that I’m going to (DRIFT DAYS #4).
P.S sry for my bad English
I pretty much go once a month maybe twice a month, though im not driving. Just taking pictures and shooting video. We do have a pretty cheap event here, $30 at an oval track.
I try to do the empty parking lot thing at least twice a month. We generally have about one event a month, and it's really not enough. If I'm spending thousands of dollars on a car then I figure I should be training myself to actually use it.
If I had a legal means I would be there, but theres honestly only 10 people in the city that take it seriously which isn't enough to rent out the track.
I just got popped with reckless driving for drifting at my old highschool. A reckless driving ticket here in the Devils Asshole would cost me around $400 after court costs and such, even more if you include my insurance premiums skyrocketing. Thankfully my little bit of Pre-Law classes have allowed me to find a loop hole. (Silly Bacon Lady thought it was "Wreckless Driving" and she forgot to put her badge number on the ticket) Due to my unique situation im getting off with a careless driving ticket ($150) unfortunately thats my entry fee and half of the gas money i'd need to make it out to the next drift event out in StL.. So make sure you take that into account before you go fuck around on the street.
In terms of the legal means, some times you have to preach it to spread it. Rally people to your cause, and show them that people need a safe place to drift. I've been having some mild success here lately, even the old school die hard straight liners pull a WTF?! when they take a look at this site, we're doing something here that could completely change the way that domestic drifting is viewed. Until now you've needed lots of money and a newer cars (Charger S197 Mustang GTO etc.) to be competative. Even now Geoff's mustang is becoming very similar to Dan's Drift Patrol cars. I remember when I started coming to the sit, seeing all the troubles this stes car was having. Go check out the video at HTM, incredible to see the transformation. Anyway I'll get down off my soap box.
I've been looking a lot for an empty lot to scoot around in. No one wants to have it on their insurance when one of us hits something. The local event we have here is put on by RSW, and it was started in response to a lack of any legal place. Attendance has been constantly low, and the only thing that keeps it going is because they are using the other half of the track for cars with traction.
Since I live in Chicago, and my cars are in CA, I only get to drift at FD events. So, once or twice a month? Costs me a fuckin fortune too. At the pro level, you get FAR LESS seat time than at the practice events. I miss the track days my friends and I had, renting half of buttonwillow with 13 guys all day. Those were the good ol days, where trailering the car to the event was by far the most expensive cost. Now, I'm just happy when I can pay less than $500 in gas, and the event is within 400 miles.
Last year I got to road race a full season (8 events) plus drift all the west coast events (4 events).
Over time, the car got more and more hardcore. As soon as it had a full cage, I was done driving it on the street. My daily is a AWD Impreza RS, so I only get to have fun during the snow here- which is great, and cheap on tires.
I may try and hit Desoto this month Mars since gas prices are down. Last time I was down there it cost $150 in gas. I think we will spend the night this time though. Its a long drive.
Working on the car this weekend. Last event I slid through the infeild and hit a drainage grate in the middle. They said the iron grate flew up higher than the car in the air when I hit it. 1 broken wheel, tore a 1foot rip in tire, bent fender, bent door. Still havent gotten it on the lift to see the other damage.
I think I need a panhard bar.
I had just come off the bank in 3rd and when the car came back around it spun out. Some times it whips fast and some times I can hold it well to link. Its hard to read sometimes.
Go to events or get with some guys to rent the track. Street drifting is not worth it.
Geoff has been talking alot about the panhard bar lately. And I do thing it should quell your little whipping problem, thus making the car more predictable.
MOSt defently panhard. i drove my friends 5.0 with a panhard and like stock suspension felt so much more predictable then mine. kinda feels like imma roll the car over until the tires break traction, in my car.
haha... Stock 4 cyl suspension = body-roll-asaurus. If you noticed in the first few episodes of the site they weren't running coil-overs.... That pan hard bar will keep your rear end right where it needs to be.
if you are coming let me know man, I still have those rims. I may bring them anyway cause im jobless and coulduse the cash and will just sell me off here soon. I kinda have doubts I will make OSW events cept maybe the qualifier there
I think American Drifters are inherently at a disadvantage with respect to our Japanese counterparts. Japanese "touge" drivers are able to hone their drifting skills on the mountain passes with little to no involvement from the local law enforcement. So American driver typically have a lot less seat time than Japanese drivers. This disadvantage can be overcame, as proof shown in Vaughn Gittin, Jr's 2005 D1 US vs Japan duel fist place win. And his 2007 D1 All star duel first place win. But then again, Jr's bio said he got a lot of seat time in an empty industrial parking lot.
There are three venues in the area. The closest one and my favorite is the Summit Point track which is amazing! The second closest one in in Virginia in Fairfax. The third is E-Town Jersey but it is about 3 hours away. I try to make it when I can to these but I normally do a touge run at least once a week down an almost abandoned strip of road near where I live. I'll cut a line through a parking lot from time to time when I think no one is looking or slide around an industrial park where I used to work. There are a lot of big parking lots in East Baltimore that are no longer used that make for good targets. LOL.
It sucks and it's not the right way but if you wanna get good you have to practice and once a month is not enough. This is how the sport began. I know it's wrong but it feels good to be naughty sometimes. LOL. The DA guys practice nonstop. They get so much seat time. That's why they are so damn good. I'm not by any means advocating anyone street drift or touge. Do so at your own risk, but if you do, be smart and don't get caught. Don't show off either, it's the best way to wreck your ride that's why I always go solo.
<--- used to live in Columbia, MD. It's nice to see people in that area doing drifting. I would talk about it and people would think I was crazy. :) Good times.
I went through that for a long time. About 2 years ago it began to get more news coverage and people began to understand what it is.
I lived in Columbia for a little over a year, just moved to Catonsville. Lost my job (stupid f***ing construction work)(god***n economy) so me and the wife had to "downsize" and move to a small apartment in the hood. LOL. When I was making money hand over fist, drifting seemed like something I could afford but now I can't even get a set of new tires to mount on my old rims. I'm having to sell off all my old computer stuff and work odd jobs just to get by. Thank God she's in the Army Reserve and has a reliable job as well or we would be on the street. THIS IS WHY YOU NEED A COLLEGE EDUCATION KIDS. LOL.
You ever been down the back roads in Elliott City? River Road? OMG!!!! A Drifter's Dream! The Loch Raven area is amazing and if you are up for about an hour drive the mountains around Frederick and Hagerstown are heaven!
R u on the west coast now? What took you there? Only reason I assumed that is you posted that you have seen some of Geoff's books.
Never do any street drifting, probably 7-10 track event last year. Remember, one ticket for screwing around on the street pays for a couple events.
